Morgan Wallen headlined BST Hyde Park in the biggest country music event ever to take place in Britain on Thursday in style
Last night, Morgan Wallen took to the stage to headline BST Hyde Park, and one of the biggest country music events ever to take place in Britain. Even before Wallen took to the stage, the show felt larger than life, with more rhinestones and tassels than Hyde Park has probably seen this century, before the music came up for Wallen’s signature walk out was projected onto the big screens. Donning an all-white outfit, Wallen came onto stage beaming, as he dove right into ‘Ain’t That Some.’ As Wallen himself said, “It’s an honour and a privilege to be here with you tonight… I can honestly say I never thought I would be celebrating the 4th of July in London, that’s for damn sure. But…you guys have already made me feel right at home and I just want to say thank you in advance if that’s the way you’re going to treat me for the rest of the night!”
It was a mighty set that encompassed all Wallen’s biggest hits, including his latest collaboration with Post Malone. Wallen was right at home, with a crowd that had doubled in size since his original headline show in December at the O2, which he acknowledged. “They told me before [that] there’s about 50,000 people in here tonight… I just want to say I’m humbled and honoured,” he noted. “…And that I’m the first country music artist to play the Hyde Park stage like this is a bad ass thing, so thank you guys so much for making this possible and thank you for loving my music from so far away.” The country music superstar held the crowd in the palm of his hands, from his energetic main stage performance, to his more intimate, acoustic-led B stage performance.
Massive moments were provided, with the riotous “Up Down”, “Whiskey Glasses” and “Cowgirls,” the latter including a feature from Wallen’s good friend and support act, Ernest, who joined the star on stage. The night culminated in a mammoth three-song encore featuring “Thinkin’ About Me”, “Last Night” and “The Way I Talk” including a tremendous fireworks display – fitting for 4th July.
What was paramountly clear from Wallen’s set was that this is just the start of his relationship with the UK, one that should see him playing stadiums over here within the year – something that he possibly hinted at as he walked off stage with the line, “See you next year!” The UK crowd will be waiting if that proves true, for his performance at BST was one of the most rapturously received in the festival’s history.
