Katy Hurt is going from strength to strength. ‘Pieces of Me,’ released last year, had already exhibited the breadth of her songwriting and vocal capacity. Her latest single, set for release on the 30th June, adds yet another bow to her already loaded set of strings.
This next single ‘See Ya Later,’ is the first single from Hurt’s highly anticipated, pledge funded “Unfinished Business” EP recorded in Winnipeg, Canada with Juno Award winning producer Murray Pulver. Speaking to Katy earlier this year on the podcast, she talked about finding this partnership, sending multiple emails around to different dream producers and almost instantly connecting with Pulver – producer of ‘Let It Lie’ by Bros. Landreth. ‘The things he was saying and the way that he was saying that he kind of wanted to work with us, the kind of approach that he wanted to take with recording…a very old-school approach,’ were the core reason Pulver became involved in the project. As with her last EP, ‘Pieces of Me,’ Hurt wanted to adopt a similar approach in this, her next project, recording in one room to feel the connection between vocal and instruments, rather than wholly separate processing – Pulver, ‘got the sound.’ The partnership clearly worked and is clear on this single, taking the magic of ‘Pieces of Me,’ to the next level with punchy, yet not over the top, production.
The single is packed with girl-power sassy, catchy lyrics that trip irresistibly off Hurt’s tongue. This is an instantly catchy country-pop track that is made for the summer – think the best kind of friends’ road trips – this is one that is bound to be stuck in your head for the foreseeable future. Yet underneath the catchy veneer, are relatable and empowering lyrics; ‘Don’t even think about chasing me, I’ve heard those lines before, sounds like the devil knocking on my door. You don’t get my love for free.’ These are the kind of lyrics we need more of, breaking through the noise of overused stereotypes and reused messages.
If this isn’t a summer hit, then I don’t want to know what one is, and it should wet everyone’s appetite for what’s to come for the rest of Hurt’s EP. Recording them over 10 days, Katy is incredibly excited about the four remaining songs making up the EP, telling me, ‘I’m so excited about these songs. There’s different pieces of me in each song. They’re all quite unique, but we found a way to blend them all together – the stories are quite cohesive.’
This year, Katy’s career has rocketed with a nomination for ‘Best Country/Folk Act’ at the Unsigned Music Awards, as well as performing festival slots at C2C, Black Deer, Stone Free, Rhythmtree and Cornbury, but it’s late 2018 that’s going to get everyone excited, with 4 more singles set to be released, alongside a couple of big budget music video releases and a UK tour. Stay tuned – this girl is set for bright (pink neon) things!
