Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros has already become a viral sensation to rival the likes of Sarah J Maas.
Fourth Wing has become a viral TikTok sensation to rival the likes of A Court of Thorns and Roses and Colleen Hoover – but does the novel live up to the hype? A: Yes and more.
The first of a supposed five part series, The Fourth Wing introduces 20-year-old, Violet Sorrengail who is forced by her mother – a General and the head commander at Basgiath – to sign up to the brutal and deadly program of training to be a Dragon Rider at Basgiath War College. Having trained her whole life to be a scribe, her odds of survival aren’t looking too good, with all the odds stacked against her, from a condition that affects her bones and ligaments that leaves her in chronic pain to the hatred from her fellow cadets as a result of her birth.
She fights both for her spot at the college and to bond with a dragon, but finds herself dealing more with the interpersonal politics at the college. The novel is reminiscent of the internal politics of Hogwarts, mixed with the sex appeal and danger of A Court of Thorns and Roses. It is a delicious, masterfully composed novel that reads as a whirlwind and breathtaking introduction to the world of Basgiath. We could not recommend this book more to add to your summer reading and get caught up before the second novel arrives in the fall (pre-order here).
