[tps_title] 4. Persuasion [/tps_title]
Persuasion is a more mature romance – written as Austen’s final finished novel. It is immensely compelling though it lacks the kind of momentum of some of her other novels, what is more prevalent in the novel is the tender characterisation of her heroine, Anne. Though she doesn’t have the fiery characteristics of some of Austen’s other heroines, she is more nuanced and allows Austen to focus on differing themes to do with age – yes, twenty seven counts as ‘old’ here.
Persuasion tells the story of a second chance at lost love between Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth. Before the story begins, Anne had been engaged to Wentworth but her mother’s friend had persuaded her to break off the engagement as he had no fortune. As Anne grows older, she remains single and immensely unhappy – Wentworth has now become a rich man, but now does not seem to care for her at all. The story yearns with emotion and missed timings, later in the story Wentworth grows jealous believing Anne to be engaged to Mr. Elliot. Ultimately, the couple reunite after Wentworth writes a letter to her telling her he still loves her and asking her to marry him.
