We break down our definitive ranking of every Eric Church record from least to most favourite, ahead of the release of the forthcoming release of his Heart & Soul album project.
6. The Outsiders (2014)
Stepping outside his usual sound, into a heavier grungier sound that didn’t work as well for us as his other records. ‘Talladega’ is surely the saving grace of this record, yet that can’t get around the inevitability that the rest of this record isn’t quite as strong.
5. Sinners Like Me (2006)
Church’s debut record was an incredibly strong lead-out record, establishing his trademark sound and ‘These Boots’ is a hell of a track that is still an important part of Church’s live-set.
4. Carolina (2009)
Eric Church’s sophomore record delved into a definitively more rock sound. Whilst there are not too many huge hits on this record, the project in its entirety is incredibly strong, showing an evolution toward a more mature sound.
3. Desperate Man (2018)
On Desperate Man, Church experimented with his sound, delivering an incredibly strong record from start to finish – a fresh take on his sonic landscape and songwriting.
2. Mr. Misunderstood (2015)
Almost every track on this record is a perfectly polished hit in its own right – from the title track to ‘Knives of New Orleans’ and ‘Round Here Buzz’ and ‘Record Year.’ It’s a flawless record that is perfectly poised and mature from start to finish, with the deeper cuts as strong as the singles.
1.Chief (2011)
Surely, Church’s strongest record including his phenomenal break-out hit ‘Springsteen’ that will inevitably be Church’s legacy hit. ‘Drink in My Hand’ and ‘Like Jesus Does’ are also huge legacy parts of his live set that elicit huge audience responses.
