Following the success of her sophomore album, this past month young, country star, Danielle Bradbery has delivered covers of her favourite songs to round out 2018 – the most recent being today’s single ’Psycho’ by Post Malone. Bradbery has covered Ariana’s Grande’s ‘God is a Woman’, fellow country star Kacey Musgraves’ ‘Slow Burn’ and the song of 2018’s summer, Post Malone’s ‘Psycho’ – in her Yours Truly series (available to stream).
The first track of the series, ‘God is a Woman’, shows off Bradbery’s soulful side. Bradbery chose to strip the track down from Grande’s heavy pop – RnB version, instead opting to create a more bluesy sound with piano, electric guitar and cello. Reminding us all of the reason as to why she won the fourth season of The Voice, the song exhibits the young singer’s protean style. The production of the song strays far from that of her latest single, ‘Goodbye Summer,’ which featured Thomas Rhett – a banjo and guitar driven song.
Taking on Grammy-nominated Kacey Musgraves’s single, ‘Slow Burn’ is the second track in the series. Bradbery took to Twitter to comment on the song, saying: ‘Every time I hear this song I am reminded to pause and recognise all the beauty this world is filled with’. One of the beauties in this world being Bradbery’s vocals. Ringing through the arrangement, Bradbery’s vocals are strong yet delicate and compliment the acoustics well.
Turning to the most recent track, the 22 year old explores the song of the summer, Psycho. Originally a trap song, Bradbery experiments with a Sam Hunt style of singing. Full of sing-talk and classic ad-lib ‘ayes’, Bradbery’s version of the song carries a chilled, swag vibe. Accompanied with the acoustic trio, Bradbery’s version sounds more sentimental and reflective than Post Malone’s original hip hop version. Is this the artist’s way of a hinting a new sound for her 2019?
