‘One Of These Days’ the new single from Foreign Affairs is out this evening.
Bristol duo Foreign Affairs are set to release their new single, ‘One Of These Days’ today.
Written, recorded and produced by brothers Adam and Lawrence Purnell, ‘One Of These Days’ is an honest reflection of the insecurities experienced throughout life. The song opens with ‘I’m scared of getting old and closer to the ground’ followed later by ‘I tried my best, you know I sold my soul’, a subtle nod to their 2015 single ‘Sell My Soul’.
The song later develops into a dreamlike state with lyrics echoing ‘but it’s ok, I’m going one of these days’; a peaceful acceptance of the inevitable.
‘One Of These Days’ captures both the individual and combined skillset of the brothers, a beautifully crafted electric guitar line is accompanied by a powerful and emotive vocal which all builds towards a cinematic, swirling crescendo.
“The instrumental for the song has been in the locker for a long time, initially it was written for the purpose of a musical interlude at live shows but the more we played with it we felt there was a vocal to be explored and I think the lyrical content compliments and lifts the track really well. ” – Adam Purnell
“I never have to search for emotion when singing ‘One of these days’, it’s right there from the off, I get lost in it, it feels like a soundtrack. ” – Lawrence Purnell
Foreign Affairs is the musical collaboration of brothers Adam and Lawrence Purnell, who began writing together in their early teens before Adam relocated to Brussels to study guitar. The move did not halt their progress, with writing sessions over Skype maintaining their productivity and the long-distance partnership providing the inspiration for their name.
On Adam’s return to the UK the duo released their first single, ‘Sell My Soul’, which received both local and national BBC radio play, and in December of 2018 the brothers released their first EP The Old Fire Station. The record was the culmination on their journey to date, the sounds, sights and experiences that the duo have shared. The EP received widespread critical acclaim and was followed by a 22-date European tour with Grammy-nominated artist Larkin Poe.
The duo blend hints of powerful Americana with pop sensibilities to create infectious, soulful, and evocative anthems.
‘One Of These Days’ is the duo’s third single release of 2020, following on from their heartfelt song ‘The Hope Comes Again’ released in October to critical acclaim.
2019 was a year of transition for the brothers, signing a worldwide publishing deal with Peer Music as well as a record deal. Foreign Affairs now return powerfully charged and ready to make a bold mark with a host of new music.
