In a world full of Instagram, reality TV and auto-tuned candy-sweet pop, rare is the song that breathes a quiet energy, softly whispering through the airwaves. Jason Kirkness brings us one such song, filled with all the elements of country that can, at times, be masked by those artists who prefer a more mass-marketable pop take on country. Twangs both on the guitar and in Kirkness’ tone are not masked by synthesised beats but allowed to shine in their full glory.
With edges to his lyrics reminiscent of Eric Church’s ‘bad-boy’ image; I’ll ‘Drink You Up All Night / Too Much Ain’t Ever Going to be Enough,’ yet with the soft touch of Thomas Rhett, Kirkness has mastered the country of the moment while staying true to his roots.
The song’s main drawback perhaps comes from the repeated element, where even the quieter excerpts refer back again to the refrain without much of a rebate. Kirkness needs perhaps solely to work on broadening the glory of his chorus to a full three minutes and then he will have conquered Nashville.
