Just when I could be accused of losing some faith in the power of the female voice in country music (sorry Kelsea) or in music generally to skirt around the raw and the painful, Jana Kramer’s new single ‘I’ve Done Love’ arrived on the scene.
The song focuses on the painful side of love and its pitfalls. If anyone has the experience of pain in love it is Kramer. The widely-publicised infidelity of her husband has recently formed a backdrop to the domestic abuse, Kramer suffered at the hands of her ex-husband. Recently, she has, incredibly bravely, come clean about this abuse, sharing her story in order to help others.
There is no discounting Kramer. Perhaps coming clean on such abuse has influenced her recent album, for this track is as raw as they come. Written by Josh Osborne, Nicole Galyon and Shane McNally, the song compares love to substance addiction.
‘Just cause my skin don’t know the sting of a needle, / That don’t mean that I don’t know the pain.’
The words rip of torturous but relatable pain. If this first single is anything to go by, it is clear that Kramer made a wise decision in parting with Warner Music Nashville to pursue the kind of music she wants to put out there with her name.
