Love Junkies talk ‘Boy Crushes’ on today’s episode of Love Junkies Radio on Apple Music Country. Listen to the full interview on their episode here.
Lori McKenna on Tim McGraw
“He’s such a great entertainer. And he is a great writer, but also picks so many great songs. And I know we can go on and on about Tim and his list of songs, but when I think about this, the one that I watched get those audiences night after night is “Angry All the Time.””
Lori McKenna on Tom Petty
“I know that it gets spoken in writing rooms all the time is when you’re stuck and you don’t know what to do. You have to ask yourself, what would Tom Petty do right now? Because the thing about… One of his secrets, I feel like or one of his superpowers and there are obviously many is the simplicity, the truth in everything that he writes or everything he wrote. And what, I mean, what a loss to not have him still writing songs. I just eat up everything Tom Petty has ever written. All that music over the years and it’s just been such a gift.”

Lori McKenna on Bruce Springsteen
“I don’t know what happened to me. Something in me just cracked open, and I cried from the minute he got out there until the minute it was over. And I missed a lot of it. So I had to see it twice. And I think I’ve watched it since then a couple times, too. But what Bruce Springsteen does to me, and a lot of people, I think, is he sings emotions. He sings the truth, even if it’s not your truth.”
Liz Rose on Al Green
“We had just moved here, and some friends of ours decided they were going to get married. They said, “Come on, come to Memphis. We’re going to get Al Green to marry us,” and we’re like, “What? No, you’re not.” He kisses every woman, every mother as he hands her the rose. It’s like communion, but you’re going to get a rose from Al Green. So, I do that, and I got this kiss from Al Green, and then we go back into his little office, and he marries our friends. It was wild.”
Hillary Lindsey on James Taylor
“I love all James Taylor, pretty much. Everything he does. Also I was reading this interview about him. I think I’ve told you all this before. He was interviewing the Chicks, and they were asking him, how did he stay so relevant throughout all the years. And he said, “Well, really the main reason is because I can only do one thing. I do me.” That’s it. He is constantly him.”

Hillary Lindsey on Steve Earle, David Lee Murphy
“I know they’re kind of different guys, but I actually interned at MCA Records in the promotion department when he was an artist there, him and David Lee Murphy. And I would freak out because David Lee Murphy would actually walk down the hall and I’d be like, “Ooh”, sticking my head out. And the other intern would be pulling me by the shirt like, “You’re not supposed to do that. Don’t be looking at the artist.””
The Love Junkies on Ray Wylie Hubbard, Eric Church
HILLARY: I was blown away. I did not know a lot of that world, but that was such a cool moment to be able to be there to celebrate Liz. And she had her family with her and they were on the front row, and it was really, really sweet and emotional. And Lori and I got to get up and sing Girl Crush for her, but then Eric got up with him like near the end of the show?
LORI: It was amazing. And so great of Eric to make the time to go and honor you guys. And obviously, I think Eric’s from, is he from North Carolina? But the Texas music just is a part of him as much as anything else. And then for them to go on and make some music together was really fun for us to watch that whole weekend.
Hillary Lindsey on meeting Kris Kristofferson, being named NSAI Songwriter of the Year three times
LIZ: Only other person, Hillary Lindsey and Kris Kristofferson, to win three times NSAI Songwriter of the Year. No one else has done that.
HILLARY: … it was just kind of crazy, Bart from NSAI called and said, “Hey, I’ve got a little fun fact for you,” one afternoon, and I’m like, “What’s that?” And he told me, and I didn’t believe him. I’m like, “What? What are you talking about? That’s absolutely nuts.” And he said, “No, you’re the one. You’ve tied with Kris Kristofferson, and we want to do something special for you. And we want him to maybe be there and give you your award, or…” Anyway, the whole night, you know me, I was a nervous wreck. I wore a jumper. I shouldn’t have worn a jumper, because I had to pee more than normal. It’s really hard to take your jumper off to go pee, because I was just so nervous. And my mom and dad came, which was really special. And my mom was like, “Oh, he is just a hunk, he is a hunk. I got to… please, Hillary, can I just give him a hug?” And I’m like, “Mom, everybody needs to chill out.” Mama wants to hug Kris, I’m about to pee in my pants. But anyway, they made the statement, and he came up, and he shook my hand, and he gave me a hug, and he said, “Baby, you remember this. You remember this.” And I was just like, “Oh my God,” it was just such a special moment. And honestly, I still don’t really believe that it happened, but I got a picture in the music room on the shelf, next to y’all’s picture of us at the Grammys together. It was a pretty special moment, but what a talented, talent, talented, talented man.
