Jordana Bryant’s career has gone viral over the past year, with her string of covers. Now, she has released her debut single ‘This Love’ that blends her love for Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift. Here, the Pennsylvania native talks about navigating writing over Zoom, her debut and what’s up next.
Hi Jordana, how are you doing? How have you been navigating 2020?
It’s been different but I’m really grateful for having a lot more time for my music and being able to connect with people over social media and doing virtual live shows, even if we can’t be in person together.
Have you found that your songwriting has changed at all or your creative process?
I’ve actually only ever co-written through Zoom because when I started getting into co-writing, quarantining struck. It’s been awesome to have more time for writing and to get to write with a lot of people who I typically wouldn’t have been able to. Since I don’t live in Nashville, where a lot of the writers that I’m co-writing with do, a lot of times it would have been difficult to set up, but I’m so grateful for all the opportunities that I’ve had to write with people through Zoom.
You’re based out in Pennsylvania now. So what is it like out there in terms of the musical scene?
There is a bit of a musical scene out in Philadelphia, I’ve done some live shows there. Mostly, I think most people listen to a lot of different music, with Tennessee, people think country, New York people think pop, but Pennsylvania it’s a mix, a lot of genres that are mixed together.
Has country always been particularly appealing to you then or did you ever play around with different genres as well?
Well ever since I was young, I’ve always loved country, my dad used to play in a country-rock band when he was in high school and college, so there would always be music going on around my house. I kind of grew up listening to Garth Brooks and Rascal Flatts, I loved how visual the songwriting was and how you could picture yourself in the story. Once I started writing, I knew that that was what I wanted to write.
This year you put out ‘This Love,’ which must have been so exciting to put out. Can you talk about that track and what it feels like to have that out in the world?
Yeah, so I actually wrote the chorus to it right before going live on Instagram, I decided to play it and it got such an incredible reaction that I knew I had to finish it and release it as my first single. I co-wrote it with Jesse Lee and Seth Mosley, who are two incredible writers in Nashville. Putting it out has been such an incredible experience, seeing how people relate to it, I’ve been so grateful for how positive a reaction it has gotten.
Will this be part of a broader EP and do you know yet what that will look like?
Yeah, so that is going to be the first track in an EP that I’m working on now. The second single I will be releasing in January, which will be a continuation of the story on ‘This Love.’ It’s about the ‘I think I love you’ stage of a relationship and who’s going to say it first. After that I’m going to be putting two more songs out, so three songs that go together that are almost the idea of a relationship evolving. Then I’ll be releasing two more songs after that. All five of those songs will go onto an EP that we’re releasing this coming year.
How have you found releasing music so far at such a young age? Do you feel any pressure in being a role model and navigating the industry?
I really enjoyed getting to experience the music industry and become a part of it, still being in school and everything, sometimes it’s a little difficult to manage my homework and then also having time for writing and singing and connecting with fans. Sometimes it’s a little hard to manage, but I’m so grateful to be able to put out music and I love to get to experience the whole process of writing and recording.
We’re so excited to hear all the new music in 2021!
