Jenny Lewis Tells Apple Music About Hew New Single “Puppy and a Truck”…
Jenny Lewis: Well, it may be like the realest song that I’ve ever written in my conversational songwriting voice. Like it really is just like a conversation. And I just wanted every line to be able to be delivered between two friends. So it’s really just a chronicle of my forties so far. I’m 45 now. And the opening line is, “My forties are kicking my ass and handing them to me in a margarita glass.” Like that’s it.
Dave Cobb: It might be a franchise later. I mean, Jimmy Buffet’s got Margaritaville. I mean forties and margaritas.
Jenny Lewis and Dave Cobb Discuss Recording “Puppy and a Truck” and The Spirit of John Prine…
Jenny Lewis: But I just loved being in the studio with you, Dave.
Dave: Likewise
Jenny Lewis: It was such a great experience for me, really special.
Dave Cobb: That song is so much fun. And when you’re here recording that song, it is a conversational thing. And it’s such a beautiful thing. I think, as a writer, it’s incredibly hard to tell the truth. It’s incredibly hard to be honest and it’s incredibly hard to write a thought into a song and a conversation. And that song is pure conversational. And I don’t know how you weaved it to be catchy and it makes sense and everything kind of feels good and positive, but I think it’s such a gift to that. Yeah. It’s absolutely masterful that song, I think.
Jenny Lewis: Well, I had been thinking a lot about John Prine and being in the room with you, and I know you guys had worked together. So he was definitely just, I mean, we were all thinking about John, we’re still thinking about John. And so hopefully, somewhere, John will hear that song up in heaven and I hope that he would like it because definitely inspired by him.
Jenny Lewis Tells Apple Music About Touring with Harry Styles…
Jenny Lewis: Well, it’s been incredible. I mean, having been at home for a year and a half. At a certain point in 2020, I thought, am I ever going to tour again? I didn’t know if the world was going to come back in that way. So to reemerge in an arena tour, I mean, it’s the biggest tour going in the world right now. We’re in a very strict bubble. And so, we’re keeping it super safe so we can get through it. It’s almost like returning to the 90s in a way, because no one’s allowed backstage, no friends, no one in the pit, no press. The crowd is so far away that you don’t really see the phones as much. It’s been a really pure musical experience. Going out for an audience that I wouldn’t necessarily play for, and the age range is vast, but there are a lot of young people.
Dave Cobb: I know a couple people who have seen you on this tour. They said the fans are going crazy. They said everyone loves the show, loves your show.
Jenny Lewis: Well, I don’t know if it’s me or it’s just Harry’s vibe that he’s cultivated and the openness of this particular group of people. Because his vibe is impeccable. I mean, and as a father, I’m just thinking about all my friends have kids and it is so positive. When he’s playing the vibe in the room, it’s pure love and acceptance. And it’s joyful. It’s so amazing.
