Brett Young on Turning 40
For my whole career, anytime somebody found out how old I was, they were surprised and didn’t think I was that old. For a while, it felt like I was playing to a younger role as an artist than I really was in my life. We were very intentional about this fitness challenge that I did, and talking about it leading up to 40 years old. I was super intentional about going, “Okay, enough of that, like is he really this old.” No. This is, I’m a 40-year-old new dad with a second baby on the way. That’s legitimately who I am, and you need to know that if you’re going to really understand these songs that I’m writing from this point forward, because there’s no confusion now… There was even a bunch of people that thought I shouldn’t be talking about getting married when I got married. Forty for me was, I’m a dad, I’m living right up to the exact number. I’m 40. That’s it. What you see is what you get and there’s no more confusion about that.
Brett Young on the Early Days of Dating His Wife Taylor Reflecting the Story In “Not Yet”
Specifically with Taylor, we met 13 years ago. At the time when we started dating, I was living in Orange County, and she was going to school at Arizona State. Every other weekend, I was driving there to spend what ended up only being really like 24 hours, when you count driving there and driving back. The first year of our dating life was tons of those moments, because you get there, you want to just stay, but you’ve got to turn around and drive back 24 hours later, so it’s that every single time. You’re staying up too late, because you know once you go to bed, you’ve got to wake up in the morning and drive home. Next thing you know, you’ve got 3:30, 4:00 AM mornings going on, just because you want to maximize the time you can spend. I mean, the first year of our dating life was that over and over again.
