Bristol duo Foreign Affairs have released their new single ‘The Hope Comes Again’ today, after premiering on Bob Harris’ BBC Radio 2 country show.
Written, recorded and produced by brothers Adam and Lawrence Purnell, ‘The Hope Comes Again’ is an honest reflection of uncertain times and the fragility that we can feel as a result, however it is rooted in positivity and the strong belief that ‘this too shall pass’.
‘The Hope Comes Again’ is a heartfelt song that blends the duos infectious song writing with an honest message. The delicate acoustic guitar is matched by the well placed atmospheric electric slide and topped with the unique vocal of younger brother Lawrence, creating a beautifully balanced composition.
“The song was written about me, from someone who can feel sadness but who is lucky enough to be able to see the positive in a person or situation, I can always see the hope”
Lawrence Purnell
“The whole process of writing, producing, and recording the song was very organic, carried out at home in Bristol. It felt comfortable and the best environment for this song”
Adam Purnell
Foreign Affairs is the musical collaboration of brothers Adam and Lawrence Purnell, who began writing together in their early teens before Adam relocated to Brussels to study guitar. The move did not halt their progress, with writing sessions over Skype maintaining their productivity and the long- distance partnership providing the inspiration for their name.
On Adam’s return to the UK the duo released their first single, ‘Sell My Soul’, which received both local and national BBC radio play, and in December of 2018 the brothers released their first EP The Old Fire Station. The record was the culmination on their journey to date, the sounds, sights and experiences that the duo have shared. The EP received widespread critical acclaim and was followed by a 22-date European tour with Grammy-nominated artist Larkin Poe.
The duo blend hints of powerful Americana with pop sensibilities to create infectious, soulful, and evocative anthems.
‘The Hope Comes Again’ is the duo’s second single release of 2020, following on from their confessional song ‘One Minute’ released in July to critical acclaim.
2019 was a year of transition for the brothers, signing a worldwide publishing deal with Peer Music as well as a record deal. Foreign Affairs now return powerfully charged and ready to make a bold mark with a host of new music.
