Following the smash success of Normal People, Sally Rooney’s debut novel is also headed for a TV adaptation – this time on Hulu. For the adaptation, Hulu have announced their four leads, including Joe Alwyn as Nick and newcomer Alison Oliver as Frances – it will be a 12-part series.
The plot of the novel focuses around four friends – Frances, Bobbi, Nick and Melissa who ask each other endless questions. As their relationships unfold, in person and online, they discuss sex and friendship, art and literature, politics and gender, and, of course, one another.
Twenty-one-year-old Frances is at the heart of it all, bringing us this tale of a complex menage-a-quatre and her affair with Nick, an older married man. Frances will be played by newcomer Alison Oliver, while American Honey breakout Sasha Lane will play Bobbi. Joe Alwyn stars as Nick and Jemima Kirke plays Melissa.
Several of the directors, producers, and writers from Normal People are returning to adapt Conversations with Friends, including Oscar-nominated director Lenny Abrahamson (Room), as well as writer Alice Birch, and executive producer Ed Guiney, and Rooney herself as executive producer.
There is no premiere date set, but Conversations with Friends will begin shooting in Dublin and Belfast this year.
