We review the new EP by Caroline Marquard – The Prologue – and reveal why we think the project cements her status as a rising country star.
Destination Country selected Caroline Marquard to be one of our DC Introducing artists, for a good reason – Marquard is a formidable, up and coming talent. Today, sees Caroline release her EP ‘The Prologue’ and the project shows how she has barely scratched the surface of her huge potential.
Marquard co-wrote every song on the EP and the result is a flawlessly cohesive project. Opening track, ‘Never Should’ve Left’ is a co-write with renowned writer Liz Rose and is an incredible showcase of the unique and rich tone of her vocal, mirrored by perfectly poised production. Indeed, her vocal opens up and diversifies throughout the track, revealing more and more layers that showcase her as a powerful artist, who’s potential is becoming yet clearer.
Following track, ‘Train of Thought’ reveals a more traditional country imbued production. It is a catchier, driving track led again by her stunning vocal at the forefront, rather than hidden under layers of production. Marquard uses the imagery of a train that she’s trying to get off to talk about breaking her cycle of behaviour. It is a standout moment on the EP, with the delicate handling of her vocal and production.
Marquard is at her best in the softer, delicate ballads on this record. So, in ‘Keep My Eyes On You’ she offers a tenderly handled piano ballad. So too, in yearning track ‘Only One,’ she showcases her vocal with stellar results, as she sings of wanting a lover.
The final tracks on the record reveal a sassier side to Marquard. In bouncier track, ‘Don’t Waste My Time,’ she becomes more assertive to her lover in not wanting them to waste her time – this is sure to be a big moment live. ‘Not a Rolling Stone’ closes the EP in style. The track is anthemic with its heavier production.
The Prologue – as the title suggests – definitely leaves us wanting more from Marquard. She is an incredibly talented artist and this project leaves us thinking that she has only given us a taste of the immensity of her potential.
