Carly Pearce has released new track ‘Next Girl’ and it’s a universal anthem. Read our review here.
Carly Pearce’s sisterhood warning to the ‘Next Girl’, released just three months after singer’s divorce from fellow country charmer Michael Ray, is an anthem for all victims of John Tucker-like heartbreakers.
The single gal’s new track is a stand alone release, straying from her self-entitled sophomore album, released earlier this year. While Pearce’s style is usually rooted in contemporary country and bluegrass, this fresh sound revisits the Kentuckian’s love for the fifth generation, 90s country music; with the instrumentation of the track taking clear influence from the likes of Shania Twain, Trisha Yearwood, and most comparably, Faith Hill. However, does the anthem have the ability to sit on the same shelf as ‘This Kiss‘ or does it leave us saying ‘that don’t impress me much‘?
Bouncing with some Natalie Maines-style banjo and train-track rhythmic, driven guitar; the entire track is a feel good bop, while Pearce’s vocals encourage girl’s night out, karaoke sing along. The tune retells the all too well familiar story of deceptive love but with a joyful, almost dance-y, feel. When speaking with her record label, Big Machine, the songstress shared her hopes for the song;
’Next Girl’ is a song that I think every girl has been on both sides of the story at least once in our life, but I bet quite a few times. And for me, I’ve been single the majority of my life, so I’ve encountered this guy a lot through my life and my girlfriends have encountered him,” [..] “Girls at my show probably encounter him at my show, or after the show I see girls encounter him at the bar. And for me, it’s an anthem for girls, kind of like as their big sister, telling them, ‘This guy’s never gonna change. It’s the same story night after night, and to watch out for it.’”
The track was co-written by Pearce with Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne. It is yet to be confirmed whether this song is autobiographical following Pearce’s own divorce from Michael Ray in June of this year, or merely a new direction leading to the singer’s third album. Either way, the single is a great blend of Pearce’s dream tracks; ‘That Kind of Girl‘, ‘Blame It on Your Heart‘, ‘Better Things To Do‘, and ‘There’s Your Trouble‘. ‘Next Girl’ has the potential to have you getting over the boyfriend you never had and is , probably, one of Pearce’s most well executed blend of lyrical melody and cohesive instrumentation since her first steps on the scene and is a pleasant teaser for her new music to come.
