New duo, Jackson + Sellers, comprised of Aubrie Sellers and Jade Jackson, will release their first album Breaking Point tomorrow. It’s a phenomenally poised and cohesive project that blends together the power and emotional vulnerability of both artist’s vocals couched in a classic rock, heavy guitar production. Breaking Point is a beautifully crafted project that allows both artists to break free from their own sounds, letting rip. As the duo themselves said in an interview with us recently, this project felt free of expectations and pressure. So, where both artists have released two solo records – Sellers most recently in 2020 with Far From Home and Jackson in 2019 with Wilderness – the former a record that was self-proclaimed ‘garage country,’ offering a dustily nostalgic, glorious, grungy country-rock sound and the latter a similarly alternative take on the genre, a freely delivered record that spanned genres from Americana to blues and rock.
Breaking Point is a seamless marriage between both artists’ sounds – each contributing three songs, one a co-write and then the duo cover three tracks. The record opens with ‘The Devil is an Angel’ a gloriously fiery version of Julie Miller’s track. It’s a powerful introduction to their sound, tight vocal harmonies layering over each other, showcasing each artists vocal in equal measure. Similarly, the other two covers on the track – Suzi Quatro’s ‘The Wild One’ and Shannon Wright’s ‘Has Been’ that round out the record offer searing guitar solos and blistering production to utterly revamp the familiar tracks.
The rip-roaring, grungy sound of the duo is amped up on stand-out tracks including ‘Waste Your Time,’ boasting snarling guitars and later tracks including ‘The Wild One,’ a swaggering, grooving hell-raising track. Elsewhere, the pace is kicked down a notch to showcase their full range. ‘Hush’ is a tenderly delivered quiet moment on the record – the track that started it all, which Jackson sent to Sellers. It’s a vulnerable and emotive track couched in an ethereal, lingering melody, whereas ‘Fair Weather’ offers a more emotional, lyrical and roots-tinged sound and the pair muse pensively on ‘As You Run.’ It is this ability to flit back and forth seamlessly between moods that gives the duo such power.
Breaking Point is a fiery and feisty introduction to a powerful duo – both artists are incredibly unique and talented in their own right, but in coming together some musical magic is created. A large part of the appeal is the perfect melding of the 70s pop-punk rage sound complete with distorted, textured guitar solos, with tenderly and delicately created lyricism and extraordinarily, emotive and vulnerable vocals and harmonies. Breaking Point is worthy of attention, a delicious genre blend, boasting searing guitar-heavy rock racers with more muted ballads that possess a greater infusion of Americana-country. More than anything, the record showcases two artists of stunning ability – both in terms of sonic vision and lyricism.
